![]() The Stanford researchers first told six techs to analyze and score sleep data, looking for changes in sleep staging that could indicate narcolepsy. “Right now is done by technicians, and clearly, there is no reason why it couldn’t be done by a computer,” says sleep specialist Emmanuel Mignot, MD, PhD, an author of the study and the director of the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine. Results were published in a 2018 paper in Nature Communications. For instance, researchers from the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine developed an AI system to analyze sleep stages to diagnose narcolepsy, finding that AI could use datasets to pinpoint unusual sleep staging more accurately than a human sleep tech. “Our goal is to bring valuable information to physicians early, so it can be used for proactive patient care management,” says Raj Misra, PhD, chief data scientist and vice president of marketing at Somnoware.ĪI could also change the diagnostic process. This way, clinicians can track trends in compliance and determine the likely impact of certain interventions on patient outcomes. This data includes demographic information and comorbidities, which all help to build a machine learning model to predict short- and long-term CPAP compliance even before the patient is put on therapy, according to a release.Īs more data comes into the program, the model automatically updates its predictions. The software works by mining patient data from electronic medical records, patient questionnaires, and lab visits. 1Īnother healthcare tech company, Somnoware, has deployed a cloud-based platform that uses machine learning to help physicians estimate the likelihood of 90-day CPAP therapy compliance. Nox researchers are making progress on automated scoring of arousals, and their results from the latest version of the arousal scorer will be presented as an abstract at SLEEP 2019. This is much more difficult to deal with than classifying each 30-second epoch.” To make things even worse is that arousals can occur at any time and can last for various amounts of time. ![]() In this case it is difficult for the AI tool to learn what is an arousal (since it learns from the data it sees), and it is difficult to measure the performance of the AI tool since it will not always agree with the human-scored labels. “To further complicate things, when arousals are typically scored there is usually not concern with exact timing….The timing of the manually scored event may vary by multiple seconds from the actual timing of the event. Arousals are only a small part of EEG signals. An example of this is AI to detect arousals in EEG. “The identification of arousals is important for the diagnosis of sleep disorders, but manual scoring is time consuming and requires expertise,” says Halla Helgadottir, co-director of Nox Research.Īgustsson adds, “A very difficult project to apply AI to is detecting rare events, which either are not well defined, where humans do not agree well on the scoring, or the scored labels do not overlap exactly over the periods where the event occurs. The Nox researchers are also working on AI tools to detect arousals during sleep. “We see this as an opportunity to empower the sleep techs and doctors to improve diagnosis or serve larger patient populations without adding to their workload,” says Jon S. Since the program began, Nox has released an AI-powered automatic sleep detector as part of the company’s sleep analysis software Noxturnal. One Iceland-based sleep technology company, Nox Medical, created a branch in 2015 called Nox Research, which focuses on developing AI tools to automate sleep study scoring and extract new insights from sleep study data. ![]() This is why sleep technology companies across the globe are taking the initiative to develop new programs that will one day make artificial intelligence (AI) a mainstay in sleep clinics. “I think is a field that is ripe for disruption in really being able to apply big data and big data tools to our field and perhaps even be a leading force in terms of how machine learning and artificial intelligence can really impact patients in the way that we deliver care,” says sleep specialist Dennis Hwang, MD, director of Kaiser Permanente’s San Bernardino County Sleep Center. Machine learning could revolutionize sleep medicine by taking over the diagnostic process, identifying gaps in care, and helping predict CPAP adherence even before therapy begins. Right now it’s typical for sleep technologists to mull over pages of polysomnography (PSG) data related to eye movements, respiration, brain activity, and more, to look for indicators of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea or narcolepsy. How will AI and machine learning change how sleep medicine providers treat their patients? ![]() In 2009, the World Health Organization issued additional guidance, the WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mould. In 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people with asthma symptoms in people with asthma and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Some people, such as those with allergies to molds or with asthma, may have more intense reactions. For these people, exposure to molds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes, or skin. How do molds affect people?Įxposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Large mold infestations can usually be seen or smelled. ![]() How do you know if you have a mold problem? Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, and pets can and be carried indoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. How do molds get in the indoor environment and how do they grow? We do not have precise information about how often different molds are found in buildings and homes. The most common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus. As I registered with the park ranger the lady was kind and said there were only 4 other guest brave enough or crazy enough to be in this 1000+acre park and to be careful while I was here. I don’t remember the exact date but it was sometime near early March when I decided to go to the park and take a break from Witch Craft to try to be a normal human for at least a day haha! I chose that faithful weekend because there was a threat of severe weather so I knew there would hardly be anyone at the park. My encounter was a very unique one that I haven’t heard of before on the region so I am wondering if other people had the same experience I had on that faithful March night back in 2008? In case you are not familiar with the Devil’s Backbone region this area is supposed to have countless stories of Ghostly encounters mostly involving Confederate Soldiers, hearing Calvary Horses and encounters with Native American Apparitions as well. I guess I should start my story by stating that I am a full practicing witch so that you can understand the many Ghost encounters I have had over my lifetime were pretty common but on this one occasion while I was visiting my favorite camping area at Canyon Lake Park near the Devil’s Backbone area I had an encounter of so many ghosts apparitions it was a bit overwhelming for me to experience This area is off of hwy 306 which is part of the Devil’s Backbone region* *The Following Story took place at the main canyon lake park in camp 5 area back in 2008. So you can even tell I never noticed anyone of the side of the road. I continued to snap pictures down the road without hesitation. I also would have noticed a large man in a bright white tshirt while snapping pictures out of the window going that slow. It appears His feet below the guardrail looked to be moving but his legs and torso above the guardrail remained still. But there were no cars in the area, there was barely enough room for a human to stand on the opposite side of the guardrail. Later when I returned home, while going through the pics, we saw a man standing on the side of the road in white tshirt looking at his hands as if texting on a cell phone. I snapped several pictures out of my drivers side window while going down th road. I drove off back towards San Marcos at maybe 15-20 miles an hours so I could snap a few out the window while I drove off. I did notice there were a lot of memorial markers on the fence line and thought that it was unusual and quite sad. I snapped a few pics and decided to leave. Sorta like you’re in someone else’s house and know you shouldn’t be. There was a very uncomfortable feeling the entire time I stood there taking pictures. On my way back from west Texas I stopped at the rest stop to take a few pictures right before sunset. I am new to the area and wanted to show my parents the stunning views from Devils backbone. ![]() ![]() "I'm using the acting skills I've learned over the years to make me feel genuine about what I'm saying, whereas if you're just reading it, it might come across a little different, a little more flat." In addition to everyday TikTokers who haven't ever stepped into a recording booth before, a few professional voice actors have also hopped on the trend, including the Los Angeles-based Shelby Young, 28, who has done voice work for TV series like Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, in which she voiced Princess with I really wanna hear do this challenge! #fyp #voiceover #voiceacting ♬ original sound - Noble Son "I figured since I have the equipment and I have the skill from the editing and production side, that I'd throw it together and I did it in just a couple hours." Lately, a ton of TikTokers have been testing their chops to see if they could make it as commercial voice actors, as part of a new trend that's been spreading all over the app. Being a voiceover actor might sound like a dream job to many: performing without having to show your face or memorize lines, but still managing to captivate people with just the sound of your voice. Sometimes a great headline will break into our minds like a ray of sunshine peeking past the clouds. Does the article address a serious topic? Is it a light-hearted, feel-good story? A do-it-yourself article?įor being only about 60 to 100 characters-or 16 to 18 words-long, a headline has a lot of responsibility. It sets the article’s tone. Similar to how the headline needs to accurately reflect the content of the article, the headline should also set the tone.Would you trust the contents of-or want to read-an article with the headline, “The top Too Things Your Doing Wrong When Losing Wait”? It is written correctly. Few things make a reader distrustful right off the bat than a poorly written headline. You never want your readers to feel stupid or that your article is “too intelligent” for them (unless your brand is meant to come off as a condescending know-it-all). It is quickly understood. Do not make the headline overly clever or so confusing that your readers cannot understand it upon reading it for the first time.Correctly implying the contents of the article is just as important. Clickbait headlines are usually intentionally misleading or provide little insight as to the content of the article. Continuing such a practice will drive your audience away from the site. When they click on the article and discover that the headline doesn’t accurately reflect the content of the article, they will become frustrated and view your site in a negative manner. Don’t falsify the headline just to get readers interested. But you want to do it in a way that is correct and truthful. We know that a well-written headline is what is needed to capture your reader’s attention. Let’s look a bit closer at what great headlines do for their articles. This headline is smaller in size than the main headline, and it is meant to provide additional information and support the main headline. Sometimes, an article will have a second headline, which is also known as a subhead. It is a breaking news story, which gives it precedence over the other stories. In the example above, the article “Trump: Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen is out” is the largest headline of the main three shown on the homepage. You will still see this practice employed on some digital sites as well. When it comes to traditional newspapers, the bigger the headline (in terms of font size), the more important the story is compared to others. But well-written headlines engage the reader in seconds and make them want to read the story in full. If the headline doesn’t immediately pique their interest, they’re moving on. In a fast-moving world, consumers need to gauge whether or not they are interested in your content. Make your headline as specific as you can.Ī headline is one of the most basic (and fundamental) elements of a news story, article, or advertisement.Write your headline after you write the article, so that you don’t miss out on any critical points. The headline needs to capture the reader’s attention, but not by falsifying or exaggerating the story. The size of the headline says a lot about its importance. You want to leave readers with a positive experience that encourages them to explore your content more. You have to make sure the content is what your readers expected and isn’t just an eye-catching clickbait. ![]() So what makes a killer title? The most important headline rule is that it should clearly communicate the value your readers will get by reading your content and deliver on that promise. No matter how great your content may be, if your headline isn’t compelling enough for your prospects and customers to want to click through, it won’t get read or shared. Your headline is often the first, and sometimes the only, chance to get your target customer’s attention. Your eyes scroll down the list, and you see one that catches your eye.īut why did it catch your eye? It was a well-written headline. Even though the search engine lists the most relevant results first, you will still need to look through them to determine which will provide the results you need. They provide the characteristics and operations that the objects will employ. In a sense, classes serve as a template to create objects. In Python, a class is a user-defined data type that contains both the data itself and the methods that may be used to manipulate it.
